VSO’s weekend tournament is a community effort

One door closed on the Vicksburg Soccer Organization’s U14/17 boys rec soccer team, so it opened its own.

The VSO will host a three-team, round robin tournament this weekend at the Bovina soccer complex next to Clear Creek Golf Course. The Northwest Rankin Athletic Association and DeSoto will also participate.

Games will be played at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Food trucks from The Rolling Mare and Sno Biz will be on hand as well.

VSO coach Rebecca Sigh said the VSO team tried to enter the Mississippi Soccer Association’s Rec Open Cup but not enough teams entered the tournament so it was canceled. Plan B was to put together this weekend’s tournament in Bovina.

“Unfortunately, they did not have any other teams register so the coaches decided to have a round robin set of games out at the Bovina Complex so they could still play,” Sigh said. “It can be tough to get games for older teams coordinated.”

Sigh added that organizing the tournament has been a full community effort. Several local businesses, including 601 Sports and Vollor, Vollor and Herring law firm, sponsored the tournament with the money going to pay referees.

Porter’s Chapel Academy — whose high school team Sigh coaches — allowed the VSO to use its soccer goals since the ones at the Bovina complex are smaller ones for youth players instead of the larger ones needed for high school age players. Volunteer coach Jonathan Strange was busy Friday lining and painting fields.

“Without hesitation, everyone involved has been all in to making these games happen,” Sigh said.
