Last week, Warren Central tennis coach Steve Summers said he believed his team was one of a few legitimate contenders for the MHSAA Class 6A team championship.
Unfortunately, they ran into one of the others along the way.
The Vikings lost two matches in third-set tiebreakers and were eliminated from the Class 6A team playoffs with a 5-2 loss to Grenada Thursday at Halls Ferry Park.
Grenada, the 2024 Class 6A runner-up, advanced to play West Jones in the semifinals on Monday in Oxford. Saltillo and Long Beach will play in the other semifinal.
Warren Central won the No. 1 boys and girls doubles points. Luke Bond and Brady Taylor beat Grenada’s Cameron King and Gabe Reyna 6-1, 6-1 in the boys match, and Amelia King and Avery Hern bested Emily Finkley and Zoe Beane 6-0, 7-5 in the girls match.
Grenada won in straight sets in girls singles, No. 2 girls doubles and mixed doubles, and the final outcome swung on the three-set matches in boys singles and No. 2 boys doubles.
Grenada’s Michael Cavanaugh rallied after losing the first set to Whitt Loper to win the boys singles point 2-6, 6-2, 1-0.
The doubles match followed the same script. Warren Central’s Sam Harris and Gray Lampkin won the first set, then Grenada came back to win the last two and the match 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
Although its quest for a team championship is over, Warren Central’s season is not. The MHSAA has a separate tournament for individual players and the Vikings have 11 of them sprinkled through the brackets.
Ivan Ozherelev qualified in boys singles; Charles Harris and Ellie Tennison in mixed doubles; Taylor and Lampkin, and Sam Harris and Bond in boys doubles; and Hern and King, and Sydney Sullivan and Lilli Feibelman in girls doubles.
Vicksburg High’s Kennedy Mullins will also play in the girls singles bracket.
The Class 4A, 6A and 7A individual tournaments are scheduled for April 15-16 at the FNC Tennis Center in Oxford.
The Class I (1A and 2A), 3A and 5A individual tournaments, as well as the semifinals and finals of the team playoffs, will be played at Halls Ferry Park in Vicksburg April 14-16.
