Softball Roundup: Missy Gators ride hot streak into the playoffs

- Vicksburg High softball player Avery Van Norman had two hits and scored a run in a 15-5 victory over Terry on Thursday.
The Vicksburg Missy Gators are heading into the playoffs on a hot streak.
Avery Van Norman and Camden McGloster each had two hits and scored a run, and Trinity McGloster hit an RBI triple and scored twice as Vicksburg beat Terry 15-5 in its softball regular-season finale on Thursday.
The Missy Gators had 12 hits — eight of the nine starters had at least one, and seven players scored a run — and jumped out to a 10-1 lead after two innings.
Zion Harvey was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, and Makynzie Dunmore had two hits and an RBI.
The Missy Gators (6-14) won their second game in a row, and for the fourth time in six games. They’ll face Grenada next week in the first round of the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs.
Game 1 of the best-of-three series is Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m. at Grenada. Games 2 is Friday, April 25, at 5 p.m. at VHS’ Softball Swamp Field. If Game 3 is necessary, it will be at Grenada on April 26 at 11 a.m.
Clinton 24, Warren Central 10
Warren Central (11-14) clawed its way back from a huge early deficit, but Clinton (17-11) sprinted away again to beat the Lady Vikes in the regular-season finale for both teams on Thursday.
Estrella Constancio and Annalise Whitworth both homered for Clinton, which scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. Warren Central scored three runs in the bottom of the first and seven in the third to get back to within 12-10. Clinton, however, had another big rally with 12 runs in the fourth inning to blow it open a second time and won via the mercy rule.
Kaylin Constancio finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Clinton. Whitworth was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, and Hayden-Leigh Holifield was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
KeKe McKay led Warren Central’s short-lived comeback by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Addi Mullen had two hits and scored a run, while KK Williamson and Mari Kynlea Ferguson scored two runs each.
Warren Central lost its second game in a row as it heads into the Class 6A playoffs next week. It will face Saltillo in a first-round series.
Game 1 of the best-of-three series is Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m. at WC’s Lucy Young Field. Game 2 is Friday, April 25, at 5 p.m. at Saltillo, and if Game 3 is necessary it will be Saturday, April 26 at 3 p.m. at Warren Central.
