Warren Central did not have a lot of hits Friday night, but it did have a bunch of everything else.
The Vikings turned seven walks, nine hit batters, six balks and six passed balls into 11 runs as they beat crosstown rival Vicksburg 11-0 in their baseball regular-season finale.
Warren Central only had four hits, but still piled up enough runs to win via the mercy rule in five innings. Two hit batters, two walks and a sacrifice fly by Trace Hood led to two runs without a hit in the first inning.
In the third inning, three balks brought runners home from third, two more runs scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball, and Lester Martin hit an RBI double as the Vikings scored six times to blow the game open.
Martin and Hayes Loper each finished with one hit and scored two runs. Caden Cole doubled and scored a run, and Maddox Lynch was 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.
Warren Central pitchers Beau Bradley, Justin Greer and Cole combined for eight strikeouts in a one-hit shutout. Seven West led off the fourth inning with a single for Vicksburg’s only hit.
Warren Central (16-9, 8-0 MHSAA Region 2-6A) has won five games in a row and 13 of its last 14, and completed an undefeated run through Region 2-6A by winning its regular-season finale. It will face Center Hill in a first-round Class 6A playoff series beginning Friday, April 25.
Game 1 of the best-of-three series will be April 25 at WC’s Viking Field at 6 p.m., and Game 2 will be at Center Hill on April 26 at 7 p.m. If Game 3 is needed, it will be back at Warren Central on April 28 at 6 p.m.
Vicksburg (6-19, 1-7), meanwhile, has one regular-season game remaining. It will face Columbus Monday at 6 p.m. at Ridgeland High School in a winner-take-all showdown for the fourth and final playoff berth from Region 2-6A. The loser will be eliminated, and the winner will move on to a first-round series against Saltillo.
