Henry Slayton’s pursuit of perfection continued on Monday.
The Porter’s Chapel Academy senior won both of his matches in straight sets to claim the MAIS Class 3A South State No. 1 boys singles tennis championship.
Slayton, who has not lost a match this season, became the first PCA player to win the South State championship in any event. He’ll try to cap his undefeated season at the Class 3A state tournament April 30 at the Ridgeland Tennis Center.
Slayton beat Newton Academy’s Cash Weems 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of Monday’s South State tournament at East Central Community College in Decatur. In the championship match, he beat St. Augustine’s Andrew Clark 6-3, 6-2. Slayton, a Hinds Community College signee also beat Clark last week in three sets in the District 4-3A tournament championship match.
PCA had two other entries in the South State tournament, but both lost in the first round.
In a battle of the Noahs, Noah LaBarre lost 6-2, 6-2 to Newton Academy’s Noah Agent in the No. 2 boys singles bracket. In No. 2 boys doubles, PCA’s Aiden Summers and Wyatt Mullinax — a seventh- and ninth-grader, respectively — lost 6-1, 6-1 to Newton’s Andrew Boothe and Garrett Estes.
