PEARL — Early or late, Ole Miss made sure that no lead was safe for Mississippi State.

Austin Fawley hit a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Will Furniss won it with a walk-off single in the 10th as Ole Miss beat Mississippi State 8-7 in the Governor’s Cup game Tuesday at Trustmark Park.

Ole Miss also came back from a 3-0 deficit earlier in the game. It won for only the second time in eight tries in the annual midweek, non-conference match-up between Mississippi’s two SEC rivals. They’ll play a three-game series that counts in the conference standings May 9-11 in Starkville.

Mississippi State (24-17) will play at Auburn, and Ole Miss (29-12) hosts Vanderbilt in SEC series this weekend.

Ace Reese hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Gehrig Frei an RBI single in the third as Mississippi State (24-17) jumped out to a 3-0 lead. That was just the first salvo in a wild back-and-forth game, however.

Ole Miss scored five straight runs, including two on a home run by Furniss, to take a 5-3 lead. Mississippi State answered with four runs of its own in the sixth inning to go back in front 7-5. Bryce Chance hit a two-run single, and Ross Highfill a one-run single combined with a throwing error that brought in a run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ole Miss’ Isaac Humphrey reached on a one-out single. Fawley then blasted a pitch high onto the berm in left center field to tie it again. It was Fawley’s sixth home run in seven games, and 12th of the season.

Mississippi State was retired in order in the top of the 10th inning — it did not have a hit after its big rally in the sixth — and then Ole Miss got to work in its half.

Brayden Randle led off with a single and got to third base on a pair of wild pitches, before Furniss lined a single over the head of MSU shortstop Sawyer Reeves to bring in Randle for the walk-off win.

Furniss finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Ryan Moerman had three hits and an RBI for the Revels as well, and Humphrey was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Frei and Highfill each had two hits and one RBI for Mississippi State.
