LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Loss of AmeriCorps will have ripple effect in Vicksburg, nation

To the Editor,

We were so very saddened to learn about the Trump administration’s cutting of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. Since the program arrived in Vicksburg, we and other not-for-profits in Vicksburg and Warren County have greatly benefited from the donation of thousands of hours of time and talent contributed by AmeriCorps members. These young people have helped with a wide variety of projects and events, helping Vicksburg, but at the same time learning valuable life skills.

In December 2008, AmeriCorps leased 75% of the All Saints property from the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi with the Diocese funding the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings and grounds. This became the fifth campus of NCCC, joining Denver, Sacramento, Perry Point, Maryland and Vinton, Iowa. The purpose of the program was to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct and team-based national and local community service. Members tutored students, constructed and rehabilitated low-income housing, responded to natural disasters and even cleaned up streams. They attended classes that taught them vital skills to be used when they were working in communities. Members of the program learn a multitude of important life lessons and become more accomplished people and prospective leaders for our nation.

It is hard to imagine where we and other organizations will find enough volunteers to help with upcoming festivals, repair projects, and runs. As we are entering hurricane season, we also worry about the lack of these trained volunteers to help with disaster relief here and across our country. We sincerely thank all of the AmeriCorps members and staff who, for 16 years, have given their all to our community and to our nation. We will miss the service that you provided to us and will miss interacting with exceptional and committed groups of young people. We know that the benefits provided by the AmeriCorps NCCC program far exceeded the cost.

Sincerely,

Nancy H. Bell
