What a weekend: Saturday boasts full slate of events

The weekend is almost here, and with it will come a wide array of events in Vicksburg. From flea markets to bicentennial celebrations, folks looking for a good time in the River City may have to pick and choose from the plethora of options.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, this year’s Spring Flea Market will take place around the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown and will run until 5 p.m. and, in conjunction, the Grace Christian Counseling Center will hold the Key City Classic 10K run, 5K run, and 5K walk. 

Also happening Saturday, the 43rd Annual Alcorn State Jazz Festival will run from 9:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Vicksburg Convention Center, 1600 Dr. Briggs Hopson Blvd.; The Vicksburg Art Association Spring Exhibition will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Old Constitution Firehouse Gallery, 1204 Main St.; and preliminary competitions for Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. at the Ardis T. Williams, Sr. Auditorium, 901 Monroe St. The final round of competition and crowning will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Saturday will also see Vicksburg’s next bicentennial celebration come to life with the inclusion of the Music and Culture Festival, which will bring a variety of artists to the River City. Featuring two stages and spots for artists along Washington Street, this year’s lineup includes:

Gordon’s Alley performers:

 

  • 10 a.m. – Vicksburg-Warren School District Honor Choir
  • 11 a.m. – Cynthia Milton & gospel choirs
  • 12 p.m. – Marcus Boyd, International Autism Activist
  • 1:30 p.m. – Booth Buys
  • 2:45 p.m. – Hayden Hunter & The Yearly Trials
  • 4 p.m. – The Whispering Trees
  • 5:30 p.m. – Epic Funk Brass Band

Washington Street Park performers:

  • 10 a.m. – Debra Franco School of Dance, and downtown sidewalk sales
  • 11 a.m. – Hype Athletics performers
  • 12 p.m. – April Green Dance Studio
  • 1 p.m. – Howl & The Big Bad Wolves
  • 2:15 p.m. – The Goodins
  • 3:45 p.m. – Ballou and the Bears
  • 5 p.m. – The Mississippi Shakedown
  • 6:45 p.m. – Dexter Allen

Additionally, cartoonist Ricky Nobile will be on site downtown offering caricatures from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the Mississippi Metropolis fashion show, presented by Hoodvency, will wrap up the festivities at the Levee Street Warehouse, beginning at 7 p.m.

Visit Vicksburg Executive Director Laura Beth Strickland said the Vicksburg Trolley will run from Washington Street Park, Crawford Square, and the Old Court House Flea Market event grounds.
