- Vicksburg High's Nick Carson singled for one of his team's three hits Saturday, but the Gators lost 16-0 to Saltillo and were swept in a first-round MHSAA Class 6A baseball playoff series.
Saltillo made quick work of Vicksburg High’s dreams of a first-round upset.
Cooper Burleson went 2-for-2 with a double and four RBIs, Jack Adams was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored, and Baylor Roberts scored twice and drove in a run as Saltillo beat Vicksburg 16-0 in Game 2 of an MHSAA Class 6A baseball playoff series on Saturday.
Saltillo (20-5), the Region 1-6A champion, swept the best-of-three series by outscoring Vicksburg 26-0 and winning by run rule in five innings in both games. The Tigers advanced to face Neshoba Central or South Panola in a second-round series next week.
Vicksburg (6-22) only had one hit in Game 1 on Friday night, and three in Game 2 on its home field Saturday. Nick Carson and Ashton Harris hit back-to-back two-out singles in the second inning to put runners at first and third, but Harris was caught stealing to end the inning and end the Gators’ only major scoring threat.
Allan Allen had the Gators’ other hit, a single in the fourth inning.
Saltillo pitcher Wilson Rodriguez had four strikeouts in three scoreless innings.
Saltillo, meanwhile, scored in all but one of the 10 innings played in the series. Burleson drove in two runs with a first-inning single in Game 2; brought in another with a bases-loaded walk in the third as the Tigers scored five times to take a 7-0 lead; and hit a two-run double in the fourth to make it 9-0.
Saltillo put an exclamation point on its victory by scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ethan Arriola hit a two-run double and six walks kept a steady stream of runners moving around the bases.
