PEARL — It was another outstanding weekend at the MHSAA and MAIS state meets for Warren County’s track and field athletes.

A total of 42 athletes from Vicksburg High, Warren Central, St. Aloysius and Porter’s Chapel Academy competed on Friday and Saturday. Combined, they won eight state championships and 19 medals for top-three finishes.

Porter’s Chapel Academy’s Schaffer Bell started things off right on Friday by winning the MAIS Class 3A boys triple jump championship with a leap of 38 feet, 6 inches. He later added a third-place finish in the long jump, and also competed in the high jump and 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 meter relays.

At Saturday’s MHSAA Class 6A state meet, Warren Central sprinter Dwight Palmer went 3-for-3 by sweeping the boys 100, 200 and 400 meters. He won the 100 in 10.73 seconds, the 200 in 21.84, and the 400 in 49.12.

Palmer’s teammate Chester Savage added another gold by winning the boys 300 meter hurdles title in 39.89 seconds. He also competed in the 4×400 meter relay.

In the Class 6A girls meet, Vicksburg’s Zion Knox won a state championship in the first event of the day, the long jump. She had a mark of 17 feet, 7 inches. Knox later added two silver medals for finishing second in the triple jump and 4×200 meter relay.

Sprinters Amiyah Hall of Vicksburg and Adria Burrell of Warren Central had a pair of 1-2 finishes in the 100 and 200 meters. Burrell won the 100 with a time of 11.93 seconds, while Hall finished second in 12.01. In the 200, Hall won in 24.64 seconds and Burrell was in second place at 24.99.

Burrell also got a silver medal in the 400 meters and Hall earned one as part of the Missy Gators’ 4×200 relay team with Knox, Nakia Jeffers and Raylyn Parson.
