The Southern Heritage Air Foundation (SHAF), based at the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport, held the A Salute to Veterans luncheon Tuesday.

Among the veterans present at the event was Rufus Puckett, a Tallulah resident who is 101 years old. Puckett was in Patton’s 3rd Army during World War II and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.

Representatives from the 101st Airborne Division were also in attendance. The Division is currently doing a training exercise in which the Vicksburg Tallulah Regional Airport is a stopping point for the relocation of troops as they make their way to Louisiana via helicopter.

Brig. Gen. Travis McIntosh of the 101st Airborne Division spoke at the event.

“We’re doing a lot today, but I’m telling you, there’s probably nothing more impactful than to spend time with you all, and we’re just privileged to have the opportunity,” he said. “You know, 101 is a significant celebration, but I cannot miss the opportunity to tell you that this is the 250th birthday of our United States Army this year, and we are finding every opportunity to party and celebrate.”

The Army members decided to join in on the celebratory luncheon when they realized the event would coincide with their training exercise.

During the event, about a dozen Black Hawk helicopters landed at the airport, transporting troops.

SHAF President Patty Mekus said the luncheon went well.

“When we picked this date a year ago, we had no clue that the 101st would be here. So that was a really special added surprise and treat for everybody that did come,” she said. “And we do the May lunch once a year and then we do the November lunch. But this lunch went great. The camaraderie was great. We probably had more veterans than we did guests. I think it was a great day. We’ve all just had a great time.”
