The City of Vicksburg has been awarded a $453,000 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) to support the continued development of Golding Park, also known as the new Riverfront Park. This funding, city officials said, will help initiate key pedestrian infrastructure improvements at the site, including sidewalks, walking paths, and lighting enhancements that promote accessibility and safety.

The new park is a joint venture between the City of Vicksburg and Warren County and will be located in the area below the corner of Oak and Lee streets. The park replaces the former Riverfront Park on Washington Street, which was closed in 2022 due to erosion issues.

The land for the new park was donated by the Golding family of Vicksburg.

Although the park is still in its early development phase, this funding represents a critical step toward bringing the city’s vision for a modern, inclusive recreational space to life, Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said. Flaggs added that the project will lay the foundation for a park that encourages outdoor activity, strengthens neighborhood connectivity, and enhances the overall quality of life for Vicksburg residents

“Golding Park is an investment in our community’s health, growth, and future,” Flaggs said. “This grant helps us move one step closer to delivering a space that encourages families to get outdoors, connect with one another, and enjoy the benefits of a safe and well-designed public park. I want to thank Commissioner Willie Simmons and the Mississippi Department of Transportation for recognizing the importance of this project and partnering with us to make it possible.”

The TAP program, administered by MDOT, provides federal funding for community-based projects that enhance pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and support more walkable, livable communities.
