- Tallulah Academy baseball player J.T. McDaniel was 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, and five RBIs in a 10-7 loss to Wilkinson County Christian Academy on Thursday.
Every time Tallulah Academy got a little spark going to extend its baseball season, Wilkinson County Christian Academy was there with a big boot to snuff it out.
WCCA erased an early deficit, took a big lead with a five-run rally, then dropped the hammer after Tallulah closed the gap and won 10-7 in Game 2 of an MAIS Class 2A semifinal series on Thursday.
WCCA (15-10) completed a two-game sweep and advanced to face Calhoun Academy in the Class 2A championship series next week. Tallulah Academy finished its season with a 20-13 record.
WCCA won 4-3 in Game 1 after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, and followed the same script in Game 2. J.T. McDaniel hit an RBI triple and scored on Tripp Gayle’s single to spot Tallulah a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
WCCA got a run back in the second inning, then scored twice on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single by Beau Deville in the third inning to take the lead. Tallulah tied it again in the fifth inning on bases-loaded walk to Gayle, but WCCA scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.
Easton Buteaux and Jonathan Meredith each hit two-run doubles for the Rams, and Meredith scored on a ground out.
Buteaux finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Meredith and Wesley Oliveaux had two RBIs each.
Tallulah mounted another comeback in the top of the sixth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for McDaniel, who blasted a grand slam over the left field fence to pull the Trojans to within 8-7.
Again, however, the Rams quickly slowly the Trojans’ roll. They scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a ground out and a steal of home to push their lead back to 10-7, then pitcher Wesley Sanchez worked around a two-out walk in the seventh inning to close it out.
McDaniel finished 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and five RBIs for Tallulah Academy. Luke Moberley was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Caleb Grady reached base three times and scored a run.
