New park is going to be great addition to Vicksburg

I was so excited this week when I saw the City of Vicksburg had received a massive grant that would go toward the new Riverfront Park.

The Mississippi River is one of Vicksburg’s crowning jewels and the park, which is located at the corner of Lee and Oak streets, will certainly showcase this majestic body of water.

The $453,000 Transportation Alternatives Program grant was awarded by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), and funding will go toward an already generous donation by the Golding family.

Golding Land Company LLC donated 5.5 acres of land that will be called the Golding Park.

In March, the Riverfront Park development project also received $1.5 million from the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund (MOSTD) — all edging the park closer to becoming a reality.

While there is still much to do and pay for, it is nice to know that progress is being made toward having a recreational space for all to enjoy

There are many areas in Vicksburg that showcase the Mississippi River, but in my opinion, none are quite this beautiful.

Before the land had been designated as a park, I would take a Sunday drive down to Oak Street, park my car and just sit and take in the breadth of the body of water.

Looking out at the river from the hillside gives a different perspective and you can get a feel for just how “mighty” the river is.

Once the park is completed, with its proposed walking trails and picnic areas, there is no doubt this will be a sought-after spot to hang out.
