Cassette and 8-track tapes may not be all the rage anymore, but the music that was popular during that era is still popular. On Tuesday, the Vicksburg Chamber Choir is set to perform some of these classic songs during their spring concert entitled “Feel Good Favorites – A night of 70s & 80s hits.”
Lynn Foley, one of the choir members and a product of those decades, said she is excited to be performing music that influenced her youth.
Foley said the concert will include tunes that are “nice quite mellow ballads,” like “Close to You” by the Carpenters, but added they will also be rocking out to “September” by the R&B group Earth, Wind and Fire.
“Which is one of my favorites,” Foley said.
Another of Foley’s favorites the choir well be singing, she said, is “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” by country music icon Dolly Parton.
“Dolly Parton is just one of my favorites because one, I love her, and, two, because she is such a phenomenal philanthropist. She gives so much back,” Foley said, adding the United Way of West Central Mississippi, in conjunction with Batesville Casket, sponsor Parton’s Imagination Library program.
The Chamber Choir is under the direction of Christie Beasley and the group will be accompanied by Austin Crabtree and The Goodins.
Additional artists selections for the evening include Carley Simon, Orleans, Simon and Garfunkel and Bill Withers. Foley said the choir will also be singing a medley of songs entitled “Yacht Rock.”
Tuesday’s performance is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Southern Cultural Heritage Auditorium, 1302 Adams St. Prior to the performance, a reception will be held at 6 p.m. until the time of the performance. A cash bar will be available.
“We did this a couple of years ago, and we got tons of great feedback,” Foley said, referring to the reception.
The concert is free, but donations are welcome.
