Open hou…cave: new attraction opens to public

Published 6:29 pm Thursday, May 15, 2025

A unique open-house event is taking place Sunday in Vicksburg.

Opening to the public for the first time will be a re-creation of the caves many Vicksburgers used for shelter during the Siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War.

The reception will be held inside a replica of a middle-class home built of the era from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at 716 Main St.

The cave is located behind the replicated house and took three years to construct. It is the brainchild of Carol and Bertram Hayes Davis, Thad Pratt and Tully Hall, and has been dubbed “Tully’s Cave.”

The cave was constructed to be an additional historical tourist attraction for Vicksburg.

Along with the opening reception, the cave will be open to the public every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. through July 4, coinciding with the dates of the 47-day Siege of Vicksburg began up until its surrender.  Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Additional information, photos, memorabilia and books will also be available to view inside the house.
