Mississippi native Davis Riley in the hunt at PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler is in the lead at another of golf’s major championships, and that’s no surprise.

Davis Riley is in the hunt, and that is.

Riley, a Mississippi native who is only in his fourth year on the PGA Tour, made five birdies over the last 11 holes Saturday to rocket up the leaderboard into third place after the third round of the PGA Championship.

The 27-year-old Riley shot 67 on Saturday and will enter Sunday’s final round at 7-under par, four shots behind Scheffler. He moved up 14 spots on the leaderboard and is tied for third with T.J. Poston.

Riley and Poston will tee off in the next-to-last group at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Coming down the stretch on a Saturday, and that’s what we work for. We want a chance to win these major championships. That’s what I kept telling myself today; this is what you work for. Embrace it and have fun with it,” Riley said.

Scheffler, the world’s No. 1-ranked player, has a three-round total of 11-under par 202 as he chases his third major championship in four years. Alex Noren is in second place, at 8-under par 205.

Scheffler made an eagle on No. 14, and three birdies over the next four holes to take control. He shot 65 on Saturday.

“I executed really well. Pretty much after hole 11 I feel like I hit a lot of really good shots. Thirteen I got a weird wind gust and then hit a poor bunker shot, but outside of that, I felt like I executed really well on back nine and hit the shots that I was trying to hit and was able to get some results from those,” Scheffler said. “Birdieing the last two was definitely two extra shots. I mean, I would assume those holes are playing over par, and so I definitely stole a couple shots there, and it was nice momentum towards the end of the round.”

Nine players had at least a share of the lead at one point in the third round, and a soggy course at North Carolina’s Quail Hollow could help Riley make up the four shots he needs to become a surprise major champion.

The 28-year-old from Hattiesburg has won twice on the PGA Tour but missed the cut four times in seven career majors. He finished 13th at the 2022 PGA Championship and 21st in The Masters last month.

He also missed the cut last week at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

“I’d love to be standing on the 18th green holding that trophy,” Riley said. “But there’s a lot of golf left, and I’m just looking forward to the challenge. Regardless of what happens, I’m going to try my best and try to put up a good fight, and if I can do that and stay within myself, I’ll be really happy. “
