MONTGOMERY, Ala. — With a precious day off as the reward, Southern Miss got its work done and punched out early.

Jake Cook, Joey Urban and Ozzie Pratt all homered, and Matthew Adams pitched an abbreviated shutout as Southern Miss run-ruled Old Dominion 10-0 in seven innings at the Sun Belt Conference tournament on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles (43-13) extended their school-record winning streak to 17 games and advanced to the semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m. They’ll await the winner of an elimination game between Old Dominion (22-30) and Troy (38-20), who play Friday at 3 p.m.

“It’s really is a pleasure to watch them play. They’re playing with so much confidence and energy and passion and love for one another, and it’s really special,” Southern Miss coach Christian Ostrander said. “They’re going after something and they know it’s hard, and we’re just going to take it one game at a time. But overall, unbelievable job tonight.”

Southern Miss is chasing its third consecutive Sun Belt tournament title and has looked like the team to beat through the first two rounds. It dispatched Texas State 9-1 in its opener Wednesday, then jumped on Old Dominion early Thursday.

Matthew Russo drove in a run with a groundout in the first inning, then Cook blasted a three-run home run in the second to make it 4-0.

Urban hit a solo homer and Pratt a two-run shot in the fifth, then three more runs in the bottom of the seventh ended it. Russo delivered a two-run single and Carson Paetow hit another RBI single two pitches later to bring in Cook with the clinching run.

Cook finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. He also walked twice.

Urban had three hits, Russo was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Pratt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Old Dominion pitcher Blake Morgan held the Golden Eagles to one run in seven innings when the Monarchs beat them 4-1 on March 16. Morgan lasted five innings on Thursday, but was torched for seven runs on 10 hits and four walks.

“He beat us once but that wasn’t going to happen again,” Pratt said. ““I looked like an idiot my first at-bat against a bunch of sliders, so I was sitting slider for the most part and he threw me a bunch of them.”

Southern Miss is averaging 9.1 runs per game during its winning streak. It reached double digits for the seventh time in those 17 games.

Adams said the run support made his job a lot easier. He walked four batters and gave up four hits, but also struck out seven. Most importantly, he pitched all seven innings to keep the bullpen fresh for the weekend.

“One of the things that (Ostrander) always says is when we get on a run it’s kind of like we go out there and expect to win, but it’s a different expectation. It’s kind of like you go out there and you know you’re going to win, and that’s just kind of how we feel right now,” Adams said. “We know we’ve got the arms to do it. The bats feel like they score 10 runs every single game. It makes pitching a lot easier when you’ve got guys like that behind you.”

Adams, a senior, missed all of 2024 with an injury, but has been sharp this year. He improved his record to 5-2 in 14 starts with his longest outing of the season. The Golden Eagles have won each of his last six starts.

“It’s just special all around. Just enjoying going out there,” Adams said. “I know my my days as a Golden Eagle are numbered. I’ve got this postseason and that’s it, so I’m just going out there enjoying each one.”
