Late-season surges helped Ole Miss and Southern Miss land home NCAA Tournament regionals, and Mississippi State to get into the 64-team field.
Now it’s time to get to work.
The three Mississippi teams got their NCAA Tournament regional assignments when the bracket was announced Monday. Mississippi State will head to Tallahassee, while Ole Miss and Southern Miss will play in their home ballparks beginning Friday.
“It’s one of our goals. It’s not just to make it to a regional, it’s to host it. To be in the final 16 when the season ends, it’s a great reward for the players and our fans. It’s special to play at home in the postseason,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said.
Ole Miss and Southern Miss were announced as host sites Sunday, but Mississippi State had to wait to find out if it was in the field. The Bulldogs won nine of their last 10 regular-season games before losing to Texas A&M in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
The hot streak took them from a bubble team to the No. 3 seed in the Tallahassee Regional that will be hosted by Florida State. Mississippi State (34-21) will face Northeastern (48-9) in its opener Friday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
Florida State (38-14) and Bethune-Cookman (37-21) will play the other first-round game Friday at 2 p.m.
“I’m so proud of the hard work and effort this team and this staff have put in to ensure the Bulldogs are back in the NCAA Tournament where they belong,” said MSU interim head coach Justin Parker, who took on that job when Chris Lemonis was fired on April 28. “You always want to be playing your best baseball this time of year and our results over the past month indicate that this team is poised to do that. It’ll be a tough regional, and we look forward to getting down there and having our loyal fans join us in Tallahassee.”
Ole Miss will face Murray State (39-13) Friday at 6 p.m. Georgia Tech (40-17) and Western Kentucky will play the early game Friday, at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
Ole Miss (40-19) was always securely in the NCAA Tournament, but played its way into hosting a regional with its performance over the past two weeks.
The Rebels won six of eight games before losing 3-2 to Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament championship game. It pushed them all the way to the No. 10 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament and a regional host site.
“It was a great few weeks’ finish and beat a lot of teams that were going to be a national seed. So we knew we were probably on the bubble for that. You just don’t know until you hear your name on Sunday night,” Bianco said. “The mantra is be where your feet are and take care of business. At the end of the day you’ve got to win games. You’ve got to win games this weekend, and if you do that you get to try and win some more games next weekend regardless of where it is.”
Like its in-state rival from Oxford, Southern Miss rode a hot streak to regional host status. The Golden Eagles had a school-record 18-game winning streak snapped with a 7-5 loss to Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game on Sunday.
Southern Miss (44-14) earned the No. 16 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament and will welcome a few heavy hitters to Pete Taylor Park this weekend.
The Golden Eagles will play Ivy League champion Columbia (29-17) Friday at 6 p.m., while Alabama (41-16) and Miami (31-24) will square off at 2 p.m. The early game will be televised on ESPN2, and the later game on ESPN+.
“I think the body of work this group of young men has put together speaks for itself,” Southern Miss coach Christian Ostrander said after the Sun Belt championship game. “We tried to schedule as hard as we could and they met that challenge. They were successful with it. They had an unbelievable streak. I mean that’s hard to do at any level, you know, little league up.”
Ole Miss was one of eight SEC teams selected as a regional host, a new record for the conference.
Vanderbilt is the No. 1 overall seed for the tournament. It is joined by No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Auburn, No. 6 LSU, No. 7 Georgia, Ole Miss, No. 14 Tennessee.
The top eight overall seeds will also host super regional series June 6-9 if they advance through the regional round.
In the Baton Rouge Regional, LSU (43-14) will play Little Rock (24-32) in the first game Friday at 3 p.m. on the SEC Network. Rhode Island (38-20) and Dallas Baptist (40-16) will meet at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
LSU is a Top 8 National Seed for the 12th time since 1999, when the NCAA adopted its current 64-team tournament format.
