LEWISTON, Idaho — LSU Shreveport was down but, as has always been the case when that happens this season, it didn’t stay that way.
The Pilots erased an early deficit, scored three unanswered runs to take the lead for good, and beat Hope International 6-3 in a winners’ bracket game in the NAIA World Series on Monday.
LSUS (56-0) — which extended its record-smashing winning streak to 56 games — will face Georgia Gwinnett or Southeastern (Pa.) Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. Those teams play Tuesday night.
Hope International (42-9) jumped on LSUS to take a 2-0 lead on Trotter Boston’s single in the second inning. LSUS tied it with a pair of RBI doubles in the third, by Josh Gibson and former Warren Central star Vantrel Reed, then took the lead on Diego Aragaon’s RBI single in the fourth.
After Hope International tied it again in the bottom of the fourth, Aragon gave LSUS the lead for good with a squeeze bunt in the sixth. Ian Montz added a two-run single in the eighth inning for some breathing room.
Montz finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Gibson was 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored, and Diego Aragon had two hits and two RBIs. Reed’s RBI double was his only hit.
LSUS pitcher Draven Zeigler had 10 strikeouts, while allowing one walk and three runs in seven innings. Brock Lucas worked the last two innings for his fourth save of the season.
