OKLAHOMA CITY — Ole Miss was good. Texas Tech was almost perfect.
Texas Tech pitcher Nijaree Canady carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, and Alana Johnson doubled in the game’s only run in the fourth inning as the Red Raiders beat Ole Miss 1-0 Thursday in the opening round of the softball Women’s College World Series.
Ole Miss (42-20) fell into the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament and will face Oregon Friday at 8:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
“I was proud of the battle. We had our chance in that sixth inning. Couldn’t quite get one, but obviously it’s double-elimination so we’ll flip this page pretty quick, like we have done in the past, and get ready for our opponent tomorrow,” Ole Miss coach Jamie Trachsel said. “NiJa threw a great game, and I thought Aliyah was incredible. Defense played great, and it came down to one miscue and not getting that one run across the board.”
Canady retired the first 16 batters she faced before Angelina Deleon singled up the middle with one out in the sixth inning. Taylor Malvin followed with another infield single, and then Canady retired the last five batters in order — four via strikeout — to close it out.
Canady finished with 10 strikeouts to outduel Ole Miss’ Aliyah Binford. Binford pitched six innings and only allowed four hits, one walk and the one run.
Johnson lined a double down the left field line that kicked off the side wall and away from outfielder Jaden Pone, which allowed Lauren Allred to score from first base.
“(Binford) just has an elite mentality. I think that allows her to stay in her space. She did an incredible job,” Trachsel said. “We thought it was a great match-up. She came off a tremendous performance against Arkansas in that (super regional) championship game. I mean, we ran into an elite pitcher if not the best pitcher in our game.”
