LEWISTON, Idaho — LSU Shreveport’s finally reached the target in its relentless pursuit of perfection.

Jackson Syring was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored, Ryan Davenport drove in three runs, and LSU Shreveport to beat Southeastern University 13-7 on Friday to win the NAIA national championship and complete an unprecedented undefeated season.

The Pilots finished 59-0. They set the record for the longest all-level college baseball winning streak by beating Hope International in the semifinals, then finished it off with the school’s first national championship a day later.

This one wasn’t easy, though. Southeastern led 7-6 after Nick Streuer hit an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. LSU Shreveport tied it in the bottom half, however, on an RBI groundout by Davenport and then left Southeastern in the dust.

Syring and Ian Montz led off the sixth inning with back-to-back home runs, then Anthony Swenda doubled and scored on a single by Davenpot. Austin Gomm added a sacrifice fly to make it 10-6, and the Pilots kept pouring it on. They scored eight unanswered runs from the fifth inning on, while the bullpen did not give up a run in the same span.

Kenneth Schechter allowed two hits and no walks in four innings of relief, then ace Isaac Rohde came in to pitch a scoreless ninth. He got Charlie Collins to ground out to second base to end it. Former Warren Central star Vantrel Reed ranged to his right to field the bouncing grounder, then threw to first for the final out.

Montz reached base four times and scored three runs for the Pilots, and Jose Sallorin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Reed was 1-for-6 with a single.
