The City of Vicksburg and the Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) partnered to bring a Stop the Violence Rally to the River City over the weekend, and a crowd was on hand at Catfish Row Art Park Saturday to support the movement.
Featuring prize giveaways, vendors and a visit from groups such as the Southside Riders MC, Nubian Kruzer and Ruff Riders, among other activities, Saturday’s event also included numerous guest speakers.
Vicksburg Chief of Police Penny Jones said the support of the community is vital in the continued efforts to curb violence in Vicksburg.
“It takes a village,” Jones said. “When we were kids, if you got in trouble in the neighborhood, you’d get it from all the parents all the way home.”
Jones said the city, along with VPD, is working outside of only normal avenues of law enforcement to keep the community’s children busy and off the streets, including this year’s Street Ball program, which begins Tuesday.
“I certainly appreciate seeing you guys today supporting the Vicksburg Police Department and this movement,” she said.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace, Vicksburg’s Ward 1 Alderman TJ Mayfield and Ward 2 Alderman Alex Monsour were also among Saturday’s speakers, as were students like James Phil Johnson Jr., who explained from his point of view how community violence affects children.
