Allene Demby Gayles

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Allene Demby Gayles of Vicksburg, Mississippi, who left us peacefully Monday, May 26. She was a cherished mother, civic leader and friend, known for her kind heart and unwavering support for others.

Allene was the daughter of the William and Melissa Demby of Vicksburg. She completed her early education in the Vicksburg Public School system, graduating from Bowman High School. She received a B.S. degree in vocational home economics from Alcorn State University in 1953. She went on to receive a master’s and PhD degree in home economics and curriculum and instruction, from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois.

Dr. Gayles was a devoted Alcornite and active member of the Alcorn State University Alumni Association for more than 40 years. She served as executive director of the ASU Hall of Honor for 10 years. She also served as the alumni class reunion
coordinator. Her awards as alumni include Hall of Honor inductee in 2001, Matt Thomas Outstanding Service Award in 1999, and Inspirational Leadership Award in 1997. In January 2001, she was appointed special assistant to Mayor Robert Walker of Vicksburg, serving until the end of his term.

Allene Gayles also served as a member of numerous organizations. Most notably are the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., The South Suburban Chicago Chapter of The Links Inc., Camille Arts and Literary Club, and Les Soeurs Charmantes Civic Club. She was also a lifelong member of Bethel AME Church and served on its board of trustees.

Allene is survived by her son, Michael; niece, Diane Demby; grandniece, Aisha Demby; and many other family members and lifelong friends. She will be remembered for her kindness, laughter and the love she shared with everyone around her. Her legacy will continue to shine through the lives she touched.

Visitation will be held at the Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home (2102 Clay St., Vicksburg) Friday, June 13, from 1 to 7 p.m., with a family hour from 6 to 7 p.m.

A memorial service to celebrate Allene’s remarkable life will be held at the Greater Grove Street Missionary Baptist Church (2715 Alcorn Drive, Vicksburg) Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Bethel AME Church Restoration Fund at 805 Monroe St., Vicksburg, MS 39183.
