- Mayor-elect Willis Thompson, left, and Ward 2 Alderwoman-elect Vickie Bailey will officially take office Tuesday, July 1.
Vicksburg’s June 3 municipal election produced tight results in the races for mayor and Ward 2 alderman, with challengers Willis Thompson and Vickie Bailey, respectively, coming out on top. Those results were officially certified by the Vicksburg City Clerk’s office Wednesday.
After counting all affidavit and mail-in ballots, Thompson defeated incumbent Mayor George Flaggs Jr. by 76 votes. Willis garnered 1,795 votes, while Flaggs secured 1,719.
In the race for the Ward 2 alderman seat, Bailey defeated incumbent Alex Mosnour by 80 votes. Bailey received 1,103 votes, while Monsour received 1,023.
Vicksburg City Clerk Deborah Kaiser-Nickson said the new administration will be sworn into office Tuesday, July 1.
Mayor George Flaggs Jr. released a statement regarding the election results on Wednesday, June 4.
“Serving as Mayor of the City of Vicksburg for the past 12 years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. “I want to thank the people of this city for giving me the opportunity to lead, to serve, and to help move Vicksburg forward. Throughout my time in office, we’ve worked together to improve public safety, invest in infrastructure, grow our economy, and position Vicksburg for long-term success. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished — not just as an administration, but as a community.
“While the outcome of this election was not what I hoped for, I respect the will of the voters and remain confident in the strength and future of our city,” he continued. “I want to thank everyone who participated in this election and everyone who has supported me along the way. I also congratulate the incoming administration and wish them the best as they take on the responsibility of leading Vicksburg. I stand ready to assist in ensuring a smooth and orderly transition.
“I’m grateful for the trust this city has placed in me over the last 12 years. Vicksburg has always been my home, and I will continue to support its progress in any way I can.”
Monsour also commented on the election results.
“I have called and talked to Ms. Bailey,” he said. “I congratulated her on the results of the election. I have also told her that should she need my help in any way, she can call me and I will be willing to help the city of Vicksburg.
“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Vicksburg over the last eight years. I want to thank everyone who has supported me and my family,” he continued. “Also, I want to thank the mayor and board as well as my staff and the city administration for all they have done to help run the city of Vicksburg.
“This administration has made tremendous progress by working with the board of supervisors, the chamber of commerce, EDF board and the port commission, as well as our state elected officials and our federal officials to help bring economic development projects and jobs to the city of Vicksburg, which may not ever be duplicated again,” he said. “We have also been working on two additional economic development projects that will bring billions of dollars of investments to our city and county when announced.
“Lastly, when my time is up working with the city of Vicksburg, I can walk out knowing I left this city better off than when I found her. May God continue to bless the city of Vicksburg.”
