Vicksburg’s June 3 municipal election produced tight results in the races for mayor and Ward 2 alderman, with challengers Willis Thompson and Vickie Bailey, respectively, coming out on top. Those results were officially certified by the Vicksburg City Clerk’s office Wednesday.

Mayor George Flaggs Jr. released a statement regarding the election results on Wednesday, June 4.

“Serving as Mayor of the City of Vicksburg for the past 12 years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said. “I want to thank the people of this city for giving me the opportunity to lead, to serve, and to help move Vicksburg forward. Throughout my time in office, we’ve worked together to improve public safety, invest in infrastructure, grow our economy, and position Vicksburg for long-term success. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished — not just as an administration, but as a community.

“While the outcome of this election was not what I hoped for, I respect the will of the voters and remain confident in the strength and future of our city,” he continued. “I want to thank everyone who participated in this election and everyone who has supported me along the way. I also congratulate the incoming administration and wish them the best as they take on the responsibility of leading Vicksburg. I stand ready to assist in ensuring a smooth and orderly transition.

“I’m grateful for the trust this city has placed in me over the last 12 years. Vicksburg has always been my home, and I will continue to support its progress in any way I can.”
