William H. Carroll, chancery clerk of Sharkey County, dies.

80 YEARS AGO: 1945

Col. Paul Thomas, former director of the Waterways Experiment Station, is promoted to brigadier general by President Truman.

70 YEARS AGO: 1955

Dr. and Mrs. Guy Jarratt and son move into their new home in Wildwood Subdivision. • Mrs. Ellen Reid dies.

60 YEARS AGO: 1965

Services are held for George Adams. • Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Huston announce the birth of a daughter, Susan.

50 YEARS AGO: 1975

Sheriff Paul Barrett announces his candidacy for re-election.• John Carson Sr. dies after a lengthy illness.

40 YEARS AGO: 1985

A group of residents kick off a fundraising campaign to restore and preserve Beulah Cemetery.

30 YEARS AGO: 1995

For the first time in two years, the Vicksburg Fire Department has a full staff. • C.H. Wilson opens a new business, The Mail Center, at Delchamp’s Plaza.

20 YEARS AGO: 2005

About 500 firefighters are in the city for the Mississippi State Fire Chiefs and Firefighters Conference at the Vicksburg Convention Center.

10 YEARS AGO: 2015

The Vicksburg Warren School District’s kindergarten reading scores were reported to be above average. • Kristen Meehan steps down from the United Way.
