UCLA beat Murray State 6-4 earlier Saturday.

“Outstanding performance, one we’ve been accustomed to on opening night of every weekend,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said of Anderson. “He got stronger as the game went along, and he executed pitches at a high level, which you have to do against that offense. Offensively, we did just enough.”

Anderson was dominant all night. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks, and finished with seven strikeouts. He was pulled after giving up a leadoff single to Cam Kozeal in the eighth inning. Relievers Chase Shores and Casan Evans threw one scoreless inning each to bring it home.

Anderson passed Tennessee’s Liam Doyle for the national lead in strikeouts. He now has 170 for the season. Doyle, whose season is over, has 163. LSU’s Anthony Eyanson, who will likely get the ball Monday against UCLA, is third with 142.

Arkansas’ only run came on a solo home run by Reese Robinett in the sixth inning.

“Real cool moment,” Anderson said of his performance. “Just taking it all in. That’s why you come here. Really proud of our team. Doesn’t matter the stat line. We won the game and that’s all I really care about.”

Offensively, LSU did most of its damage in the top of the second inning.

They drew two walks and a bunt single off of Arkansas ace Zach Root, then Chris Stanfield singled in one run, and another came home when Josh Pearson legged out a grounder to avoid an inning-ending double play. The Tigers made it 3-0 when Root hit Michael Braswell III with a pitch with the bases loaded.

LSU’s final run came on an RBI single by Derek Curiel in the eighth.

“When you’re facing that caliber of arms, you aren’t going to get a ton (of runs) maybe like you would playing in SEC ballparks where home runs are a real thing with every pitch of the game,” Johnson said. “We did an excellent job setting the table. I’ve coached enough games here to know getting the lead is really important.”
