Vicksburg’s Juneteenth Festival was held Saturday at Halls Ferry Park. The all day event was sponsored by Visit Vicksburg and the city of Vicksburg and featured a drum call, libations, live music, story telling, poetry and a variety of vendors.
Vicksburg native Jerry Jenkins performed the drum call at the festival. Jenkins was born in Vicksburg, but grew up mostly in Chicago before moving back south. Now, he travels through Mississippi and to other states sharing West African history and storytelling, djembe drumming and traditional dancing.
Chair of the Vicksburg Juneteenth Festival and Vice President of the Vicksburg Juneteenth Committee Jeremy Johnson said at least 100 attended the festival.
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
