Williams siblings power Cannonballs in summer swim meet

A little rain and thunder did not deter the Vicksburg YMCA Cannonballs, and it certainly wasn’t enough to keep the Williams family from streaking through the pool like little bolts of lightning.

Siblings Titus, Shelby and Jonah Williams combined to win 12 events in their respective age groups as the Cannonballs took on the Fitlife Flippers in a dual meet Monday at the Wilkinson Ver Beck YMCA pool. The meet was delayed by thunderstorms after only three races, and swimmers powered through some persistent early-evening drizzle after that.

The McComb-based Flippers won the girls’ team competition 368-154, and the boys’ 268-154, but Cannonballs manager Wilson Carroll was encouraged by the individual results against one of the Jackson Swim Association’s more established teams.

The Cannonballs are a summer program designed primarily to introduce younger swimmers to the competitive side of the sport.

“It means a lot to be able to beat those guys in any races. They smoked us in the overall results because they have so many older swimmers and relays. Give us time,” Carroll said.

Titus Williams led the Cannonballs by winning three individual events in the 9-10-year-olds’ boys’ division. He won the 50 yard freestyle in 36.90 seconds, the 25 backstroke in 20.53, and the 25 breaststroke in 25.57.

Titus was also on the winning 100 yard freestyle relay with Yadier Cruz, Noah Corley and Soren Wiedenfeld; and the winning 100 yard medley relay with Cruz, Wiedenfeld and Jack Dornbusch.

Shelby Williams won the 11-12-year-olds’ girls’ 50 yard freestyle in 30.56 seconds, the 50 backstroke in 36.97, and the mixed open division 100 yard individual medley in 1:19.41.

Jonah Williams earned victories in the 7-8-year-olds’ boys’ 25 yard backstroke in 28.40 seconds, and the 25 backstroke in 35.11 seconds. He also joined Barrett Sharp, Elijah Stamper and Benji Corley to win the 100 yard freestyle and medley relays.

Evvy Fletcher was another multiple winner for the Cannonballs in the 9-10-year-olds’ girls division. She won the 50 yard freestyle in 42.27 seconds, the 25 backstroke in 24.87, and the 25 breaststroke in 28.37.

In addition to their relay victories with Titus Williams, Dornbusch and Cruz earned some individual wins.

Dornbusch won the 25 yard backstroke in 29.94 seconds. Cruz won the 50 freestyle in 39.23 seconds and the 25 butterfly in 23.19.

Aubrey Rankin also won the 13-14-year-olds’ girls 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 30.53 seconds, for the Cannonballs.

Monday’s meet was the only one at home for the Cannonballs during the Jackson Swim Association’s month-long season. The team will compete in the JSA’s City Swim Meet on June 28 at 8:30 a.m. at the Grit Training Center on Lakeland Drive in Flowood.
