Warren County held its annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day Saturday, June 7, in the Sherman Avenue School parking lot. Many Warren County residents showed up to safely dispose of their unwanted waste.
A total of 736 vehicles were recorded dropping off waste; 29,840 pounds of scrap metal was disposed of. The paper shredding truck left completely full. At one point, county road department personnel had to go fetch two dump trucks due to waste management dumpsters being full, county officials said.
Warren County Board of Supervisors President Kelle Barfield said she considered the event to be a big success.
“The annual Hazardous Waste Day is an incredible coordinated effort on the part of a lot of departments, both at the county and the state level. Residents love an opportunity to safely get rid of the things that have piled up in their garages and shops throughout the year, the kinds of things that they have a hard time disposing of, like waste tires, old computers, and broken appliances,” Barfield said. “But it’s small things as well, like cans of paint and oil and even paper shredding for folks that want to safely dispose of paper materials. For me, it’s one of my highlights of the year. It’s amazing to see how much waste we generate as a society, and yet there are specialty companies who take care of these various forms of waste for us.”
