OMAHA, Neb. — Kade Anderson is projected as a top-five pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft. He showed why on Saturday night.
The LSU left-hander turned in a performance worthy of an ace by throwing a complete-game shutout as the Tigers beat Coastal Carolina 1-0 in Game 1 of the College World Series finals.
Anderson threw 130 pitches on a 97-degree evening. He allowed 10 baserunners — on three hits, five walks and two hit batters — but finished with 10 strikeouts and worked his way out of several jams in the first half of the game.
“I was just really focusing on the next pitch throughout the night,” Anderson said. “It wasn’t pretty, but got the job done. Just putting the team in a situation to win was my goal. Sometimes with the staff we have, all you need is one run. And Coach (Jay) Johnson prepares us to be one-run ready.”
LSU (52-15) snapped Coastal Carolina’s 26-game winning streak to move within one victory of its second national championship in three years and eighth overall. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Sunday at 1:30 p.m. If Coastal Carolina (56-12) wins to force Game 3, it would be Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Game 2 will be televised on ABC, and Game 3 would be on ESPN.
“If it was going to be easy there would be more than one national champion,” Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall said. “At the end of the day, we’ve got to regroup. We’ve won 26 in a row. Let’s just call it what it is; the odds were not in our favor to go 28-0 and win this national championship.”
Saturday’s victory marked the first time LSU won a postseason game — in the SEC or NCAA tournaments — by a score of 1-0. The only run of the game was scored in the bottom of the first inning, as LSU leadoff hitter Derek Curiel walked, went to second on a ground out, and then scored on Steven Milam’s single.
Anderson (12-1) outdueled Coastal Carolina’s Cameron Flukey (8-2) and Dominick Carbone from there. Flukey started and had nine strikeouts in six innings, then Carbone followed with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Chanticleers’ hitters couldn’t fully solve Anderson, though. He left runners stranded in each of the first five innings, then retired 14 of the last 17 batters he faced. Coastal finished 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Anderson had his second complete-game shutout of the season.
“A great performance tonight by our team, especially Kade,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “A special performance. Not taking it for granted; that’s what we’ve seen all year. He’s the best pitcher in the country, and he showed it again tonight.
“That’s been on the regular, every Game 1 of the entire season. So I’m glad he did that tonight, so everybody got to see what we’ve seen and known for an entire season.”
