A Yazoo City man wanted for shooting two women at an apartment complex Sunday morning before fleeing town was apprehended just hours later by Warren County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies.

Yazoo City Chief of Police Terry Gann said John Young fled town Sunday morning after shooting two women at Windsor Court Apartments. Gann said Young appears to have sat for hours observing the two women before eventually getting into a fight with another man who later fled the scene. Gann said Young forced his way into the apartment before shooting the two women, who are both now in stable condition.

Gann said officers were able to track Young using a phone stolen from one of the victims.

“We could see he was traveling on Highway 3 toward Vicksburg and alerted Warren County Sheriff’s Office,” Gann said.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said deputies positioned themselves on Highway 61 North at Redwood.

“The vehicle was spotted by deputy Joseph Stubbs,” Pace said. “He followed at a distance before deputies Patrick Brown, T’onna Sims and myself were able to converge on it.”

Pace said the vehicle eventually turned north onto Washington Street, where Vicksburg Police Department units blocked the road allowing for law enforcement to stop the vehicle near Hutson Street.

Pace said two firearms were recovered from the vehicle, including the gun authorities believe to have been used in the shooting.

Gann said Yazoo Police Department officers were able to transfer Young back to town without incident and thanked Pace and WCSO for their assistance.

“We just really appreciate Sheriff Pace and his deputies for their quick response and their ability to take him into custody without incident,” Gann said.

Gann added Young has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, as well as two counts of attempting to commit a crime (murder) and is expected to make his initial appearance in court Monday. He is being held at the Yazoo City Jail.

Gann said the incident remains under investigation.
