Virginia Hawkins McElwee, age 78, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Knoxville, Tennessee, after an extended illness. Born in Winona, Mississippi, Virginia was a proud graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and a featured baton twirler for the dance team. She devoted over 40 years to teaching grammar and literature across the state, inspiring generations of students with her passion for learning and language. Beyond the classroom, Virginia was deeply involved in school life — leading theater programs, guiding yearbook and newspaper staffs, and coaching award-winning mock-trial teams. In recognition of her dedication, she was named Teacher of the Year by the Vicksburg Warren School District in 2010. Virginia found joy in books, sports, and playing bridge with dear friends. She cherished time spent with her family and took immense pride in her role as mother and grandmother.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Dott Vaiden Harris, and her father, Horace Allen Hawkins. She is survived by her two daughters, Virginia Harbour (K.C.) of Tupelo and Vaiden Taylor (Scott) of Knoxville; and her four grandchildren, Whit and Yancey Harbour and Katie and Davis Taylor.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Caris Hospice team for their compassionate care during Virginia’s final months. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church in Vicksburg, Mississippi, or to the Alzheimer’s Association. A private service will be held to celebrate her life. Virginia’s warmth, dedication, and kindness touched the lives of many and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
