United Cleaners is a family-owned dry cleaning business that has been serving Vicksburg for 96 years.
It is co-owned by Andrew Amborn, Robert Amborn Jr., and their father Robert Amborn Sr.
Robert Amborn Jr. said it has been a privilege for the business to serve Vicksburg for almost a century and to work with his father for two decades.
“We’ve been working side-by-side with our dad for almost 20 years, which has been great,” he said.
The business was founded in 1929 by Louis A. Pichetto. The first location was on the corner of Washington and Clay streets. In 1946, the business was moved across the street.
Amborn’s grandfather, Charles Amborn, first went to work for Pichetto at the second location.
“He worked there and became a partner in the business. He was there up until 1985 when he passed away. And my dad came to work there in 1975,” Robert said.
In 1993, the business moved to its current location on Cherry Street.
Recently, United Cleaners has expanded its market. On Feb. 23, the Amborns opened a location in Jackson on Fortification Street.
The Amborns have seen many changes over the years, one of which is the transition to using environmentally friendly chemicals in their dry cleaning process.
“State-of-the-art, environmentally friendly. That was our main goal about 10 years ago, is to become environmentally friendly,” Robert said. “And we have wet cleaning and all that stuff that we put in there just to get rid of any harmful chemicals or anything like that.”
About two weeks ago, United Cleaners opened a kiosk near Corner Market where customers can drop off their dry cleaning. They are also working to expand their pick-up and drop-off services in Vicksburg and Jackson. They utilize an app that customers can use for the delivery service.
Robert said his favorite part of his work is getting to know the community, which has been very supportive of the business.
“(My favorite part) is servicing everybody inside of our community and outside of our community,” he said. “It’s really great to meet so many people. Me and my brother worked the front counter in high school, so we got acquainted with everybody. We knew everybody, you know? Now we’re starting to see their kids come back to town and we’re servicing them. And it’s great for us because we just kind of watch everybody grow and watch their families grow.”
