A Vicksburg police officer is recovering in an area hospital after being forced from the roadway by another car and crashing into a tree, police officials said.

The Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) has confirmed officer Jeremy Herrington was involved in a single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning, shortly after 12:30 a.m., near the intersection of Interstate 20 and Highway 61 North.

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones said preliminary reports indicate Herrington was forced off the roadway by another vehicle, causing his patrol unit to leave the highway and strike a tree in a ravine. He sustained injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson for medical treatment. He is currently in stable condition.
