Two graduates of River City Early College have been named recipients of the prestigious Frank Crump Jr. Next Generation Scholarship for 2025. 

Lauren Cooley and Jannah Archer have each been recognized for their academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to community service.

Both graduates plan to attend the University of Southern Mississippi this fall, where they will pursue degrees in healthcare, focused on improving lives and uplifting underserved communities.

Cooley earned her high school diploma and an associate’s degree from Hinds Community College and will major in biology with a pre-med track. Cooley has set her sights on becoming a pediatrician. She hopes to one day establish a medical practice in an economically disadvantaged area, ensuring access to affordable, high-quality healthcare for all children.

“My high-school teachers and advisors encouraged me to find something I was passionate about,” Cooley said. “One day in my 10th-grade year, I realized I love science. I love the fact that science helps us solve problems while discovering new things. I also realized that I get such joy working with children.” 

For Cooley, becoming a pediatrician would be the perfect union of her love for science and her passion for helping children, she said.

Archer will pursue a degree in nursing, with plans to earn her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license this summer as the first step toward her long-term goal of obtaining a master’s degree and Ph.D. Archer envisions becoming a trusted healthcare professional and eventually opening a senior living facility that promotes wellness and independence through healthy lifestyle choices.

“I want to be a change agent and community champion. My generation has to improve our communities by pouring love, care, and time back into the world,” Archer said. “I hope that my positive actions can influence others to serve the community.”

Frank Crump Jr. Next Generation Scholarship, named in honor of the late educator and Civil Rights advocate, supports students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community service.

Since 2014, the scholarship foundation has awarded 48 scholarships totaling $40,600, thanks to the generosity of its donors.
