FLOWOOD — The Vicksburg YMCA Cannonballs finished their summer swim season by cutting times and racking up top-tier finishes at their biggest meet.
The Cannonballs totaled 22 top-eight finishes as a team Saturday at the Jackson Swim Association City Meet in Flowood. Siblings Titus and Shelby Williams led the way with three top-two swims apiece.
Titus Williams won the 9-10-year-olds’ boys 50 yard backstroke with a time of 41.15 seconds. It was the Cannonballs’ only victory of the day, but he also had second-place finishes in the 50 yard freestyle (33.76 seconds) and 100 yard individual medley (1:30.01).
Williams was second out of 49 swimmers in the 50 freestyle. Teammate Yadier Cruz was also in the top 10 of that event, with a ninth-place finish in 38.26 seconds.
Cruz also placed fourth in the 50 yard breaststroke and seventh in the 100 IM.
Shelby Williams, meanwhile, had three top-three finishes in the 11-12-year-olds’ girls division. She finished second out of 36 swimmers in the 50 yard freestyle in 30.69 seconds; second in the 50 breaststroke in 40.60; and third in the 100 IM in 1:19.67.
The Williams’ younger brother, Jonah, also had a good day in the 7-8-year-olds’ boys division. He placed third in the 50 yard freestyle in 44.69 seconds, and was fourth in the 25 backstroke and 25 butterfly.
Another set of brothers, Cormac and Soren Wiedenfeld, added to the Cannonballs’ point total for the day. Soren Wiedenfeld was fifth in the 9-10-year-olds’ boys 50 butterfly in 57.31 seconds.
Cormac Wiedenfeld placed third in the 13-14-year-olds’ boys 100 butterfly in 1:19.94; fourth in the 100 freestyle; and fifth in the 50 backstroke.
Other top-eight finishers for the Cannonballs were:
• Jack Dornbusch, who was seventh in the 9-10-year-olds’ boys 50 breaststroke.
• C.J. Wilson, who was eighth in the 15-18-year-olds’ boys 50 backstroke.
• Evvy Fletcher, who was sixth in the 9-10-year-olds’ girls 50 breaststroke (50.67 seconds) and eighth out of 57 swimmers in the 50 freestyle (40.43 seconds).
• Iris Fletcher, seventh in the 25 yard backstroke in the 7-8-year-olds’ girls division.
• Aubrey Rankin, fifth in the 50 freestyle in the 13-14-year-olds’ girls division with a time of 31.12 seconds.
• Jordan Smith, seventh in the 13-14-year-olds’ girls 50 breaststroke in 53.71 seconds.
The Cannonballs finished eighth out of 13 teams in the boys’ team standings, with 111 points, and were 11th in the girls’ standings with 51.5 points. They were 10th in the combined standings. More than 300 swimmers competed in the meet.
The Club Township Tigersharks won all three team championships, with 467 points for the boys, 563 for the girls, and 1,030 combined.
The Cannonballs, who operate under the umbrella of the Vicksburg YMCA, are a youth program for children ages 6-16. They compete in the Jackson Swim Association, which has about 18 teams based mostly in the Jackson Metro area. There is a month-long season in June with weekly meets, culminating with the JSA City Meet — its league championship — in Flowood.
