Four people appeared before Circuit Court Judge M. James Chaney Wednesday to enter guilty pleas in connection with crimes for which they had been indicted.
Troy Koon pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to five years in the custody of Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), suspended, followed by five years of probation. He was also ordered to pay court costs, fines and fees.
Damien Turpin pleaded guilty to shooting into an occupied dwelling. In August 2024, he is accused of opening fire on an ex-girlfriend’s home, with the bullets entering into a bedroom of the home. He was sentenced to 20 years in the custody of MDOC, with five years to serve and 15 years suspended, plus court costs, fines and fees.
Ishmael Williams pleaded guilty to shooting into an occupied vehicle. In connection with the plea deal, charges of aggravated assault were dropped. The charge stems from an incident in October 2024, when police were called to Merit Health River Region Hospital regarding a person who had been shot. Records indicate that Williams shot Le’Juan Scott in the face following a struggle over a backpack. Reportedly, Scott was at the home of Williams’s girlfriend when a confrontation and struggle ensued. When a gun fell out of the backpack, Williams used it to shoot Scott and his vehicle, a 2008 GMC Yukon. Williams claimed self defense. He faces a sentence of one-to-five years in prison. Sentencing was set for July 18 at 9 a.m.
Tyrone Haggins pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated domestic assault in connection with an incident in August 2024. He and his girlfriend reportedly got into a physical altercation in which she accused him of strangling her. Haggins was given a seven-year suspended sentence with three years of probation and ordered to pay court costs, fines and fees. A “no contact” order was also given to both Haggins and the victim.
