As part of his ongoing commitment to community wellness and youth development, Ward 1 Alderman Thomas “TJ” Mayfield said this week he is proud to officially launch the Dream Community Champions Summer Program in partnership with the Vicksburg Police Department, Vicksburg Fire Department, and a coalition of local organizations and volunteers.
The program will run Monday through Friday from July 11 to July 31, providing free meals, books, and essential toiletries to children at six delivery locations:
- Farmer Street Park
- Ken Karyl Park
- Elizabeth Circle
- Waltersville Estate
- New Main Apartments
- Pearl Street Park
Food and items will be available between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and any remaining meals or supplies will be donated to the local unhoused community to ensure that nothing goes to waste.
“We’re making sure our kids are fed this summer,” Mayfield said. “And any leftovers we have will go directly to support our unhoused neighbors. This is about building a community where everyone is cared for, no matter their circumstances.”
In addition to daily deliveries, volunteers are invited to help with packing items between 9 and 10:30 a.m. at the following partner locations:
- Vicksburg Warren Youth Development Center (2020 Mission 66)
- Gertrude Young Community Center (923 Walnut St.)
- Mt. Zion #4 MB Church (122 Union Ave.)
- VPD Training Room (820 Veto St.)
Mayfield said this summer initiative reflects his broader vision of responsive leadership and collective action to improve quality of life across Vicksburg’s most underserved areas. The program is made possible thanks to the support of community partners, including DREAM, United Way of West Central Mississippi and the City of Vicksburg.
