Super Bulldog Weekend in Starkville got off to a not-so-super start.

Florida scored four runs in the first inning Friday night and went on to beat Mississippi State 6-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Dudy Noble Field.

Logan Shore pitched a complete game for Florida (29-10, 10-6 Southeastern Conference). He allowed three runs on six hits, walked none and struck out six.

“From the fifth through the ninth was the best Logan has looked all year,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “To be honest with you, he’s thrown some good games for us but as far as his crispness and getting after hitters and locating, I’m really pleased with how he looked in the second half of the game. There’s a difference between putting up zeroes like he did in the first three innings and putting up zeroes in the fifth through the ninth.”

Josh Tobias went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and a career-high four RBIs to lead the Gators at the plate.

Tobias’ bases-clearing triple was the big hit in the first inning, and he scored on a ground out by J.J. Schwarz to put the Gators ahead 4-0.

“It all started in the first inning when Dalton (Guthrie) had a great at-bat to start the game and got things going for us. We scored four runs in the first and it gave us a lot of momentum,” O’Sullivan said.

Mississippi State cut it to 4-3 in the fourth inning. Wes Rea had an RBI single, and John Holland knocked in two runs with a double.

That was as close as the Bulldogs got, however.

Florida pushed the lead to 6-3 in the fifth inning on an RBI ground out by Peter Alonso and an RBI double by Tobias, and Shore took care of the rest.

Dalton Guthrie went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Florida, and Richie Martin had two hits.

Holland was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Mississippi State (22-17, 6-10).

The teams play game two of the series today at 2 p.m.
