A Vicksburg man could be facing federal drug charges after his arrest Wednesday.

Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said Leo Harris III, 38, faces charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana after his arrest about 12:54 p.m. after he was stopped following a car chase with officers that began on U.S. 61 South and ended on Kemp Bottom Road off Warrenton Road.

He said the arrest was made based on a tip, and the case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, which will seek a federal indictment against Harris.

He said officers found 1 pound of marijuana and about 8.5 ounces of powdered cocaine.

Armstrong said police and MBN agents searched Harris’ home at 1317 China St. after the arrest, but did not find any drugs.

“It looked like what we call a ‘trap house,’” Armstrong said. “It’s not livable; it’s mainly a place where people go to hang out and sell drugs. We believe he was taking the drugs to the house. I like to think we prevented someone from making $17,000 to $19,000 from the sale of cocaine and marijuana.”

Armstrong said he planned to talk to city Community Development officials about inspecting the house and will be watching it in the future.

In other drug arrests:

• John Ross, 29, was arrested Wednesday in the area of Clay Street and Old Highway 27 on a warrant charging him with sale of methamphetamine.

Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said officer Russell Dorsey was patrolling the area about 10:50 a.m. when he recognized Ross and made a traffic stop. Angela Jobe, 43, a passenger in the car with Ross, was charged with possession of methamphetamine. She said Ross’ arrest was the result of an undercover operation.

Officers recovered .42 ounces of methamphetamine with an approximate street value of $2,000.

Ross and Jobe were being held without bail in the Issaquena County Corrections Center pending an initial appearance in Municipal Court.

• Shondrick Montgomery, 38, faces a charge of sale of cocaine after his arrest about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of China Street.

He was being held in the Issaquena County Corrections Center pending an initial appearance in Municipal Court.

• In an unrelated case, a call from a store at the Vicksburg Mall about a shoplifter resulted in the arrest of Clifton Belton, 56, on a warrant for theft from the Baton Rouge, La., Police Department.
