Warren Central senior Trevor Scribner has earned the right to be called one of the best high school shooters in the state of Mississippi.

At the Mississippi All Services JROTC State Rifle meet in Brandon Jan. 26-27, Scribner earned third place over all out of 54 shooters from throughout the state.

Competitors shoot from three different positions —prone, standing and kneeling — and their total score determines the overall winner.

Scribner finished second overall in standing, fifth in kneeling and ninth in prone.

“I just enjoy the fact that I get to shoot. I practice at least once a week and then at home I practice holding positions with my rifles,” Scribner said. “I’ve always liked to shoot since I can’t even remember. And if there’s a team where I can compete shooting, why not.”

The competitors shoot air rifles from a distance of 10 meters. In standing, Scribner scored a 173 out of 200. He scored a 177 out of 200 in kneeling and a 191 out of 200 in prone. His total score was a 541 out of 600. The winner and second place finisher were both from Gulfport High School. They shot a 548 and 545 respectively.

Although his best finish was in standing, Scribner said his favorite position to shoot from is prone.

“It is the most accurate position and you just get to lie there shooting, not concentrating on much of anything,” he said.

The Warren Central NJROTC program has been competing in the state meet since 2011, but Scribner is the first shooter from the team to place in the meet.

“I think it means a great deal to him individually because his awards were individual awards. They went for his own personal achievement,” NJROTC commander Jimmy Holder said. “I think its significant to me personally and the unit as a whole because we have been to the state meet from 2011 forward. Out of those six or seven years, we have never earned anything other than the right to go and participate. The fact that he was able to earn some individual awards raises it to a new level for us.”

Of the 11 teams in the competition, Warren Central finished in eighth place. Out of a possible 2,400 points, Warren Central finished with 1,779. Gulfport won the competition finishing with 2,138 points.
