Wreck kills Valley Park man on U.S. 61

A Valley Park resident died in a one-vehicle wreck on U.S. 61 just north of Valley Park early Sunday.

Willie Charles “Will” Wansley, 28, died of head and neck injuries apparently hours before the wreck was found, Sharkey County Coroner Ola Mae Holmes said this morning.

Sharkey County Sheriff Jake Cartlidge said Wansley’s truck veered off U.S. 61 about a quarter of a mile inside Sharkey County. He apparently tried to bring the 1999 Ford F250 pickup back onto the road before it flipped several times, the sheriff said. The truck landed in a ditch that made it not readily visible from the road.

Cartlidge said the wreck was reported to the Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department at 6:53 a.m. Sunday. He said Wansley was wearing a seatbelt.

Wansley was born in Jackson but had lived in Valley Park all of his life. He was a graduate of Sharkey-Issaquena Academy and Mississippi State University. He was a farmer and a partner in Redwood Custom Services.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home in Vicksburg. Burial will be at Sinai Cemetery in Florence.
