Lemuel L. Houchins died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at ParkView Regional Medical Center. He was 87.

Born in Hannibal, Mo., Mr. Houchins was the son of the late Thomas Lee and Margaret Grady Houchins. He lived in St. Louis until 1940 when he moved to Vicksburg. He graduated from Hannibal High School and attended Finley Engineering College in Kansas City. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa, Italy and the Philippines. He retired from the Vicksburg District Corps of Engineers after 35 years of service. He was a member and elder of First Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Hovious Houchins.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Williams of Germantown, Tenn.; a son, Larry Houchins of Jackson; four grandchildren, Becky McElduff of Kansas City, Mo., Rob Williams of Germantown and Palmer Houchins and Peyton Houchins, both of Jackson; and other relatives, including Clarita Hanes of Hannibal and Ernest Hovious of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Hancell Bankester, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Sam Heltzel, Jeff Montgomery, Don Murrell, Henry Bordelon, Randy Gay and Barry McCleave.

Honorary pallbearers will be Nels Nyman, Chuck Ivins, Lee Forrest, Terry Temple, Barger Moss and Walter Barker.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church building fund, 3005 Porters Chapel Road, Vicksburg, Miss 39180.


MORTON Martha Jenetta McDill died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Scott Regional Medical Center. She was 83.

A native of Newton, Mrs. McDill was a former resident of Harperville and had lived in Morton for the past 55 years. She was a member of Morton First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include three sons, Gerald McDill of Vicksburg, Jimmy McDill of Morton and Gordon Sansing of Meridian.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Morton. Burial will follow at Morton Memorial Gardens under the direction of Ott & Lee Funeral Home.


Bonnie Jo Nowling died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Vicksburg Medical Center. She was 73.

Mrs. Nowling was a native of Oak Ridge and a lifelong resident of Vicksburg. She was the co-owner and bookkeeper for Leon Salvage Company for 25 years. She was a member of Bradley Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jack Burgess Pressly and Curtis Leon Nowling; a son, Jackie Dale Pressly; a daughter, Sue Anne Pressly Cummins; her parents, Henry and Emmie Modena Redditt Griffith; and a brother, Bobby Ray Griffith.

Survivors include two stepsons, Lavon Nowling of De Funiak Spring, Fla., and Larry Nowling of Holt, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Sheila Ricker of Brundidge, Ala., and Diann Strouse of Crestview, Fla.; a sister, Toni G. Griffith of Vicksburg; grandchildren and other relatives including Margaret Griffith, Pete Griffith, Thomas Griffith and Ella Price, all of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Herron officiating. Burial will follow at Bradley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Rick Standish, Joe Branch. Arnold Lumbley, Adam Brown, George Stevens, David Baggett Sr., Chris Scallions, Thomas Griffith, Steve Cook, Junior Scallions, Bill Collins and Pete Griffith.

Honorary pallbearers will be Judy Branch, Dr. Martin Newcomb, Dr. Walter Johnston, Ernest Martin Sr. and Dr. Steven Zachow.
