When the call came to Vicksburg’s Central Fire Station that a downtown business was being threatened by flames, firefighters didn’t have far to travel.

“We literally ran across the street,” said Fire Chief Kevin Westbrook.

A passing motorist phoned the department around 10:50 a.m. Wednesday when he saw flames at Price’s Glass and Mirror Co.

The building at 716 Madison St., is across Madison Street from the fire station, or about 30 feet away.

By the time firefighters got the call, a small wooden building adjacent to the business was fully engulfed, Westbrook said.

“We think maybe some vagrants were living in the building, but we aren’t positive right now,” said Leslie Decareaux, fire prevention coordinator for VFD.

The structure, which is used for storage at the business, was destroyed by the blaze after about 10 minutes, but firefighters kept the flames from reaching the main part of the building.

No injuries were reported, Westbrook said.
