[01/17/01] Beau Theobald booted in both of St. Aloysius’ goals as the Flashes beat Madison-St. Joe, 2-1, Tuesday to clinch a playoff berth.
A win over the Bruins Thursday at St. Al would give the Flashes (9-1) the division title.
Michael Strickland assisted Theobald’s first goal and Andy Gough had nine saves during a steady downpour. St. Al outshot St. Joe, 13-10.
“It was like playing in a swimming pool,” St. Al coach Shirley Agostinelli said. “It shut down our speed.”
The Bruins’ goal came on a penalty kick midway through the second half. St. Al led 2-0 at the time, but Agostinelli didn’t relax.
“I remember what they did at Vicksburg,” she said, referring to St. Joe’s late three-goal barrage to tie VHS.
“My defense saved the game,” she said.
The match was postponed Jan. 11 because of rain, but the conditions were better then than Tuesday, Agostinelli said.
The field conditions will be sloppy at St. Al Thursday, but the game will be played unless it’s lightning, Agostinelli said.
