Worn-out Warren County falls in finale

[05/21/01] Warren County beat Vicksburg, 57-31, to advance to the championship game of the 12-year-olds’ AAU state tournament.

But a worn-out WC team fell to the Jackson-based Lady Jaguars, 68-44, in the finals on Sunday.

It was WC’s fourth game of the day. The Lady Jaguars, who beat WC by 10 on Saturday, had to play just two to get to the title game.

WC’s Brittany Willis had 18 points in the loss.

WC finished second and Vicksburg was third in the eight-team tournament.

WC’s Andrea Harrison scored all nine of her points in the second half and Marlee Mims scored eight of her 12 in the second half as WC turned an eight-point halftime lead into a 57-31 blowout of Vicksburg in the semifinals. Willis finished with 12 points and Annie Beaugh added 10 for WC. Vicksburg’s Kristin Eillis had a game-high 15.

Beaugh, Willis and Mims scored 12, 11 and 10, respectively, in WC’s 47-14 win over Tishomingo in their second game.

In Sunday’s opener, Willis poured in 19, Beaugh scored 17 and Hailey Bullen chipped in 11 in WC’s 58-29 win over Parklane.

Ellis scored nine in Vicksburg’s 60-23 loss to the Lady Jaguars earlier Sunday.

It was the first of several AAU state tournaments at Warren Central. The 14-, 16- and 17-year-olds’ state tournaments will be there May 31, June 1 and June 2.
