St. Al relay team breaks state record at VHS Invitational

[9/23/01]St. Aloysius’ boys broke a state record in the 200-yard freestyle relay in the Vicksburg Invitational at City Pool Saturday.

Alan Ebersole, Allen Karel, Turner Simmons and Will Tomlinson finished the race in 1 minute, 36.50 seconds, more than a second better than Gulfport’s previous Mississippi High School Activities Association record (1:37.76) set in 1999.

The Flashes won the boys’ side of the meet. Warren Central’s girls won and the Vikings were second.

Elena English won the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle to pace the Lady Vikes.

St. Al’s Bern Ebersole won the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke and Bonney Neill won the 50 and 100 freestyle for the third-place Lady Flashes. Tomlinson was first in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Daniel Jourdan of St. Al was tops in the 500 freestyle and Alan Ebersole was first in the 200 individual medley.

Karel won the 100 backstroke.

The Flashes have won two of three meets they’ve participated in this season.
