(10/25/03)Porters Chapel Academy got a solid performance from its seniors and ended the season on a high note, routing Humphreys 36-7 Friday night.
Humphrey Barlow had 16 tackles and a pair of short touchdown runs, J.D. Lee ran for one touchdown and returned an interception 38 yards for another score and Ryan Hoben completed 10 of 18 passes for 153 yards and a TD for the Eagles (4-6, 3-3 Conference 5-A).
PCA had already been eliminated from playoff contention, and finished fifth in the conference.
“Our seniors came out really ready to play, and they played really well,” PCA coach Bubba Mims said. “It takes away some of the sting, but it makes you think about what if, because they really played well.”
Humphreys ripped off a pair of long runs late in the first quarter to set up James Reed’s 1-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal with 2:30 to play in the period. The touchdown knotted the game at 7-7, but PCA’s defense put the clamps on after that.
Humphreys netted only 134 yards of total offense, with nearly half of it coming on the scoring drive. The Eagles took full advantage of the Rebels’ offensive struggles, scoring 29 unanswered points to put the game away.
Jason Pugh caught a 6-yard TD pass for PCA, and Michael Busby kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Gerald Mims also had a solid night running the ball, with 102 yards on 15 carries.
